Founder's Letter
Dear Friends,
I grew up in West Virginia, drawn to the beauty of nature, trees, natural wood and woodworkers’ craftsmanship. My father (Jack) was an excellent amateur woodworker, building a small sailboat, kayaks for my brother and I, and beautiful furniture for our home, family members, and friends
Trees are one of our most valuable and renewable resources. They provide a long list of benefits. Right at the top is absorbing CO2, while releasing oxygen back to our environment. In a managed woodlot, this CO2 can be stored for generations in wood products, while a fallen, decaying tree releases its stored CO2 back into the environment.
Our hardwood lumber comes from well-managed, privately-owned woodlots within a 150-mile radius (minimizing transportation impacts). They are NEVER clear cut! Our purchases provide an incentive for owners to manage and maintain their woodlots, thus maximizing their environmental benefits.
FlatJack was created out of wide-ranging discussions with two Amish friends in Holmes County, Ohio. Both have more than 20 years of experience in the high-quality Amish furniture industry. One operates a dry kiln for lumber – a critical step in making high-quality, hardwood furniture. The other makes hardwood parts and panels for chairs and tables. They are life-long friends.
Our discussions focused on how to replace “throwaway furniture” with high-quality Amish-crafted furniture and to deliver it more environmentally efficient. We knew that flat pack shipping reduces costs while providing significant environmental benefits. For example, a packaged assembled chair typically takes up about 12,000 cubic inches of airspace, compared to 7,600 cubic inches for TWO chairs shipped flat pack. That 68% reduction in space taken up in a truck means less trucks on the road and less packaging materials. A smaller package is also easier for you to handle and get into your home.
We also knew that assembling flat pack furniture can be a maddening and relationship-threatening experience. We were determined to make assembly hassle-free – no assembly puzzles to solve! It took more than a year of experimentation and multiple refinements to come up with a part-free fastener.
There are NO bags of parts and funny little tools. Assembly literally takes a couple minutes as our short assembly instructions demonstrate. Disassembly is just as easy, making it easy and efficient to keep FlatJack furniture in your life.
We are just getting started and are designing more products that can be flat shipped, using our exclusive fastener.
We hope you will let FlatJack add comfort, and the beauty and warmth of natural hardwood to your home. Your thoughts and questions are welcome at founder@FlatJackUSA.com.
Sincerely,
Charlie Prince
